Breaux Contemplates Run

Friends of former Senator John B. Breaux of Louisiana say he is contemplating a run for governor there in the fall, but will not get in unless Gov. Kathleen Babineaux Blanco, a fellow Democrat, gets out.

Despite her poll numbers — 35 percent in a recent match-up with Representative Bobby Jindal, a Republican — Ms. Blanco has given no indication that she will not run for re-election. Her standing has been badly damaged by what are widely seen as failures in handling the recovery from Hurricane Katrina.

Questions have been raised about Mr. Breaux’s eligibility because he lives in the Washington region. His friends say the problem would not be insurmountable. Mr. Breaux has previously flirted with a run at the governorship. “I don’t have anything to say about that now,” Mr. Breaux, now a lobbyist, said yesterday. “I will before long, but not now.”
